Noyce Scholarships:

Exclusively available to future science and mathematics teachers

This National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded UC Riverside the Noyce Scholarship for Excellence in STEM Teaching. Through this grant, multiple $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to aspiring middle and high school science and mathematics teachers.  The long-term impact will include involvement of over 50 classrooms that support a total of 2,000 students at the rapidly growing, low-performing  Moreno Valley Unified School District.

Application & Deadlines:

Scholarship Awards for 2009-2010

Eligibility:

Recipient must be either a current UCR:

1) STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) major with intent of pursuing single-subject science or mathematics teaching credential

OR

2) Single-Subject Science or Mathematics Teaching Credential Candidate who has earned a STEM Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Major: Declared as a major in either the College of Natural Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) or the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE)
  • Class Level Standing (one of the following status):
  • UCR Junior or Senior level student (completion of 90 units or more) with anticipation of completing a STEM degree within the next two years and intention to pursue a single-subject science or mathematics teaching credential

  • UCR Single-Subject Science or Mathematics Teaching Credential Candidate with a STEM degree

  • Academic Status: Good Standing
  • GPA (cumulative): 3.0 or greater
  • Early Field Experiences: EDUC 3 and EDUC 4 or equivalent
  • Teaching Credential Potential: Demonstrated eligibility for UCR Teaching Credential Program
  • Noyce Application: Submit completed Noyce Application, which includes two letters of recommendation and personal narrative essays
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Permanent Resident Alien

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced Field Experiences: SMI & ALPHA Apprentice Program or equivalent
  • Exams Completion: CBEST AND CSET (one or more science/mathematics subtests)


Selection Criteria:

Noyce Scholarship selection review will be based on:
  • Academic Merit (Primary Consideration)
  • Demonstrated academic excellence as confirmed by academic transcripts
  • Potential to meet UCR credential program requirements
  • Personal Narrative Essays
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Financial Need (Secondary Consideration)


Teaching Terms and Conditions:

Scholarship recipients must satisfy all general conditions listed below (specific details are provided in the financial aid contract and scholarship agreement):
  • Be available for apprentice placement at Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) beginning:
  • August 10, 2009: Credentialed Candidates
  • January, 2010: Junior and Senior Level Candidates
  • Working towards completion OR completing a teaching credential program from UCR and earning a California "preliminary" teaching credential for single-subject mathematics or one of the science disciplines.
  • Teach mathematics or science in a high-need school (as defined by the National Science Foundation) for two years for every one year of scholarship received.
  • The high-need school teaching obligation must be fulfilled within six years of earning the California "preliminary" teaching credential.

If these conditions are not satisfied, the scholarship will revert to a loan with repayment pro-rated to reflect any partial teaching service.
