Steps to Follow to Become a California Credentialed Teacher: Single Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential
- 1. Passage of California Basic Educational skills Test (CBEST).
- Verification of Subject Matter which can be done in two ways:
- Passage of California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) in the credential subject area.
- Complete a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved subject matter preparation program (SMPP) in a core area as an undergraduate.
- Satisfy the U.S. Constitution requirement by either passing: 1) UCR's POSC 10 or HIST 17A, or 2)an examination in this area administered by regionally accepted accredited institution.
- Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree.
- Complete a teacher preparation program in secondary education, such as UCR's Graduate School of Education: Teacher Education Program including student teaching and obtain recommendation for the credential by the California institution where the teacher education program was completed.
- Go to a local police station and get your fingerprints taken.
- Submit application along with your fingerprints to California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for your Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential.
