SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today released the following statement regarding the expansion of the California Teach program to train more people to become mathematics and science teachers.
"California is in desperate need of more math and science teachers to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. In order to protect our economy and maintain our state's ability to compete on a global basis, California must hold onto its position as a leader in technology. The University of California, California State University, and the business community have long recognized the need to prepare students for future jobs that are more technical and require skills in math and science. I applaud their efforts to work together with K-12 and the California Community Colleges to expand the California Teach program to meet this critical need.
"California 's long-term economic well-being depends on what we are teaching students today. It is imperative we do everything to attract more people into these fields to become math and science teachers."
